Saint Valentine, a Roman priest under Emperor Claudius II, is essential to the history of Valentine's Day. Claudius forbade marriage for young men, believing that bachelors made better soldiers. Valentine disregarded this command by secretly marrying couples, which led to his arrest and execution on February 14th, about 269 AD. Despite the church's early emphasis on his resistance rather than his association with love, his sacrifice for love ultimately sealed his place in history as a symbol of love and passion.
