National Panchayati Raj Day is celebrated every year on April 24th to commemorate the establishment of the Panchayati Raj system in India. This year, on National Panchayati Raj Day 2023, we will be celebrating the 29th anniversary of this important day. The Panchayati Raj system was established through the 73rd Constitutional Amendment Act, of 1992, which came into force on April 24th, 1993. 

National Panchayat Awards: 

To acknowledge the contribution of the Panchayats and Panchayat members towards the development of rural areas, the Ministry of Panchayati Raj gives out National Panchayat Awards every year on National Panchayati Raj Day. These awards are given to the best-performing Panchayats and Panchayat members in different categories, such as Cleanliness, Drinking Water, Sanitation, and Solid Waste Management. These awards encourage the Panchayats and Panchayat members to work towards the development of their respective areas and to improve the living conditions of the people. 

Revamped NPA 2023: 

To further strengthen the Panchayati Raj system in India, the Ministry of Panchayati Raj has revamped the National Panchayat Awards (NPA) in 2023. The new NPA framework focuses on the outcomes achieved by the Panchayats rather than the inputs provided. The framework also gives priority to the development of aspirational districts and ensures the participation of all Panchayats in the awards process. The revamped NPA framework will motivate Panchayats and Panchayat members to work towards the development of their respective areas and to achieve the desired outcomes.

The Ministry of Panchayati Raj has also launched various resources to empower Panchayats and Panchayat members to effectively perform their duties. These resources include online portals for the preparation of Gram Panchayat Development Plans, a mobile application for monitoring the implementation of the plans, and a portal for the e-learning of Panchayati Raj. These resources have made the Panchayati Raj system more transparent, accountable, and effective.
