History and Significance of Mahavir Jayanti in Jainism 

Mahavir Jayanti is the most significant festival in Jainism which commemorates the birth of Bhagwan Mahavir Swami, the 24th and last Tirthankara of Avasarpiṇī (present age). It is celebrated on the 13th day of the rising moon in the month of Chaitra (March–April) as per the lunisolar calendar. 

The word 'Jayanti' means 'birth'. So, Mahavir Jayanti celebrates the birth anniversary of Lord Mahavira. He was born in 599 BCE at Kundalgrama, Vaishali district in present-day Bihar state of India. He was named Vardhamana by his parents. At the age of 30, he left his family and social life to become an ascetic. For 12 years, he practiced severe penance and meditation. He attained Kevala Jnana (omniscience) at the age of 42 and became a Tirthankara. For 30 years, he preached Jainism throughout India and attained Nirvana (moksha) at the age of 72 in 527 BCE at Pawapuri, Nalanda district in Bihar state. 

Celebrations of Mahavir Jayanti 

Mahavir Jayanti is celebrated every year on the birth anniversary of Bhagwan Mahavir Swami, the 24th and last Tirthankara of our present age cycle. It is one of the most important festivals in Jainism. 

This festival falls on the 13th day of the rising moon in the month of Chaitra (March-April) according to the Hindu calendar. On this day, devotees get up early and take a holy bath. They wear new clothes and visit temples to offer prayers. 

At temples, special pujas and rituals are performed along with the recitation of scriptures. Devotees also engage in various charitable activities such as giving food to the needy, donating clothes and money to the poor, etc. on this day. 

The main significance of this festival lies in remembering and paying homage to Bhagwan Mahavir Swami, who was born on this day in 599 BC. He was a great teacher who preached ahimsa (non-violence), Satya (truthfulness), brahmacharya (celibacy), and aparigraha (non-possessiveness). His teachings have inspired millions of people over the centuries and continue to do so even today.
