January, Indian Army Day is celebrated to honor our brave soldiers who risk their lives to protect our country. The Indian Army is the largest component of the Indian Armed Forces and has played a significant role in safeguarding our nation’s territorial integrity. On this day, we remember the valiant soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice for their motherland and also salute those who continue to serve the nation with distinction.

The Indian Army traces its origins back to the British East India Company’s army that was raised to protect British commercial interests in India. The first regular army unit was raised in 1760 and since then, the Indian Army has participated in a number of conflicts including both World Wars. After Independence, the Indian Army has been involved in conflicts with Pakistan and China. It has also been deployed for peacekeeping operations under the aegis of the United Nations.
