World AIDS Day - What You Should Know

On World AIDS Day, there is a lot worth remembering and reflecting. This day stands for addressing HIV in all countries with the primary goal of HIV stopping at every point where it starts spreading. It emphasizes that we're stronger together than when we are apart.

The AIDS pandemic

Since the first World AIDS Day in 1988, much progress has been made in the fight against HIV/AIDS. In 2015, the United Nations launched the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with the aim of ending the AIDS pandemic by 2030.

Today, there are approximately 37 million people living with HIV worldwide. While this is a significant decrease from the estimated 70 million people living with HIV in 2000, the pandemic is far from over. Every day, nearly 5,000 people are infected with HIV and almost 4,000 people die from AIDS-related illnesses.

What are the symptoms of HIV?

There are a number of symptoms associated with HIV, and they can differ from person to person. Some people may experience no symptoms at all for years after contracting the virus, while others may start to feel sick soon after infection.

Common symptoms of HIV include fatigue, fever, rash, swollen lymph nodes, and flu-like illness. As the virus progresses and damage is done to the immune system, more serious symptoms can develop such as tuberculosis, pneumonia, or meningitis. AIDS, the most advanced stage of HIV infection, can lead to wasting syndrome, dementia, and death.

What is prevention?

There is no one sure way to prevent AIDS, but there are many things you can do to lower your risk. The best way to prevent AIDS is to abstain from sexual activity or to be in a long-term, monogamous relationship with an HIV-negative partner. If you do have sex, always use condoms and limit your number of sexual partners.

You can also lower your risk by avoiding sharing needles or other injecting equipment, and by not having unprotected sex with someone whose HIV status is unknown. If you are pregnant, you can get treatment to prevent your baby from getting HIV.

Conclusion

As we mark World AIDS Day, it is important to remember the progress that has been made in the fight against HIV/AIDS. However, there is still more work to be done. We must continue to raise awareness about the disease and its prevention, and provide support for those who are living with HIV/AIDS.
