Bhai Dooj: Why It Is Celebrated And Significance

The festival of Bhai Dooj is celebrated with great enthusiasm and joy all over India. On this day sisters pray for the health, wealth, and prosperity of their brothers as well as give them gifts in return. Mothers embrace their sons with a lot of love and affection to celebrate the occasion.

Significance of Bhai Dooj

Bhai Dooj, also known as Bhau-beej or Bhai Tika, is a Hindu festival that celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters. It is celebrated on the second day of the five-day Diwali festival.

The word Bhai means brother in Hindi, while Dooj means second. The festival is also known as Bhai Bij in some parts of India.

Bhai Dooj marks the end of the Diwali festivities and is considered to be one of the most important festivals in Hinduism. On this day, sisters perform a special puja (ceremony) for their brothers and tie a sacred thread around their wrists. This thread is considered to be a symbol of protection and is believed to keep away evil forces.

How to Celebrate Bhai Dooj

Bhai Dooj, also known as Bhau-beej or Bhai Tika, is a Hindu festival celebrated on the second day of the lunar month of Kartik. The festival is observed by married women who perform a special puja for their brothers with the hope of receiving their blessings. The word "Bhai" means "brother" in Hindi, while "Dooj" means "second."

The sister prays for her brother's long life and prosperity and applies a tilak (a red mark) on his forehead. In return, the brother gifts his sister with money and promises to protect her from harm. Bhai Dooj is considered to be an auspicious day to celebrate the bond between brothers and sisters.

The origins of Bhai Dooj are unclear, but it is believed to date back to the time of the Vedic period. Some scholars believe that the festival was originally created to celebrate the relationship between Yama, the god of death, and his sister the Yamuna. Others believe that it commemorates Krishna's visit to his sister Subhadra after slaying the demon Narakasura.

Conclusion

The festival of Bhai Dooj is a celebration of the special bond between brothers and sisters. It is a time for siblings to reaffirm their love and affection for each other and to exchange gifts and sweets. This year, let us all take the opportunity to celebrate Bhai Dooj with our loved ones and to create memories that will last a lifetime.
